How can you find space in your Fireplace
April 6, 2024

Many RV’s now include an electric Fireplace/Heater or sometimes 2 or more somewhere in the floorplan. While these have become common and provide multiple obvious benefits, many conceal hidden spaces that can be put to good use. If you are looking for additional storage space, consider the following:

  1. Most Fireplace units are 6.5 inches deep or less.
  2. Observe the area around and behind your fireplace.
  3. Estimate the depth from the front of your fireplace to the next open space.
  4. Look at the depth of any cabinets above or to the sides of the fireplace.
  5. Deduct 6.5 inches from the estimated depth based on your observations

If you suspect there is wasted space, or you’re curious like me, it’s time to take a look.

To remove the fireplace, you probably only need a #2 Phillips screwdriver or preferably a #2 Robertson screwdriver with a square tip.

  1. Remove 2 screws from the outer side of the openings in the glass front.
  2. Remove the glass by pulling up on the glass only with your fingertips in the same openings. Don’t pull outward until the glass raises about an inch, but you may need to pull up firmly.
  3. After setting the glass aside, remove 4 screws holding the fireplace in the cabinet.
  4. Gently lift the fireplace and slide it from the cabinet. The main unit can be set in the floor while you evaluate your space or unplugged and stored in a more convenient location. Note, If the glass front is larger than the front of the main unit, don’t reassemble and attempt to store in one piece to avoid damaging the glass.

If you’ve discovered enough space to utilize, you have a couple of options depending on your RV.

  1. Access space from another area. For instance, if the back of the open space is in the bathroom or a hallway, you may be able to cut an opening and leave it open or cover with a door.
  2. Most fireplaces will sit in their cabinet without screws. You can place them in the original location, replace the glass front (with or without screws), and leave it there. Note, Replacing the front glass screws allows removal as a single unit. Caution: If you choose this option consider how to secure the fireplace when traveling or replace all screws before traveling.
  3. Design a way to open the fireplace by making a hinged door or drawer that can be opened or closed at will. Caution: this method requires securing before traveling with a latch or other method.

Obviously, the amount of additional space and your personal use for that space will dictate the amount of time and money you are willing to spend. Also, these fireplaces produce very little heat on the cabinet, but please use common sense when storing things in the area behind them.
